Rally scoring, briefly
Every rally scores a point, whoever served. Games go to a target (usually 21 or 25), and most leagues make you win by two, with a cap so a game cannot run forever. "To 21, cap 23" means first to 21 wins by two, but the first team to reach 23 wins regardless.
What leagues actually play in the regular season
| League | Regular season match |
|---|---|
| Chicago Sport & Social | 3 games to 21, win by 2, cap 23. If game 3 has not started with 10 minutes left, it goes to 15, cap 17 |
| CCA Sports | 3 games to 21, cap 25, all played |
| 608 Beach | Best of 3, rally to 21, win by 2, cap 25 |
| Volley Life | 2 games to 21, win by 2, cap 23. A split is a tie, no decider |
| Sportskind | 2 games to 21, cap 25, plus a tiebreak game to 15 |
| LUG Sports | Best of 3, rally to 25, 25, 15 |
| Volo | Games to 25 with no win by two |
Three things worth noticing
"Best of three" usually means "three games." In a season, a dead third game still has value: it is more volleyball for the money, and it gives the standings more to separate teams with. Many leagues play all three and count each game separately, so a 3 and 0 night is worth more than 2 and 1.
A short third game is a clock decision. A 50 or 60 minute court slot does not reliably fit three games to 21. Leagues that shorten game 3 to 15 are not playing a decider, they are fitting the slot.
Two-game formats can tie. Play two games with no decider and a 1 and 1 night is a real result. If you choose this format, give your standings a tie column.
The playoffs switch to best of three
A knockout match has no reason to play a dead game, so leagues that play all three in the season usually play first to two in the playoffs, often 21, 21, 15. Write both formats into your rules so nobody argues about it on the first playoff night.
Picking a format for your league
- One hour on the court: 3 games to 21, cap 23, all played. This is the most common shape in the leagues above.
- Fifty minutes: 2 games to 21 plus a third to 15.
- You want every team to finish on time: 60 minutes or 3 games, whichever comes first, the way Underdog runs it.
- Standings on games, not matches: decide this up front. Ranking on games won rewards a 3 and 0 night over a 2 and 1 night; ranking on matches does not.
How Sideout handles it
When you set up a league in Sideout you choose the points per game, the cap, how many games are played and whether a split can stand as a tie, and the setup screen reads the format back to you in plain words. Scores can be tapped in point by point or typed in after the game. See how leagues work in Sideout.
